The right hand screw in my centre stand sheard off. Why?!!

The pivot screw through my centre stand (GS1200, 33000 miles 2004) sheard off for no apparent reason. Is this normal?

Welcome to HUBB.

We would need to see pictures of the new surface formed on the bolt end to confirm the failure mode, but if it is a shear type as against torsion, tension or fatigue my first guess would be poor material or overloading?

Thanks for your reply Andy. Having looked on other forums ie. UKGSer it would seem i`m not on my own. It would appear that for some reason only the right hand side is affected. I have replaced the screw with a longer one to facilitate removal should it fail again in the future. I will also keep an eye on lubrication and tightness in case these are defining contributors. The standard screw is HT 8.8 M10x30 countersunk head. I replaced with an M10x40 which also allows the use of a locknut plus locktite (belt and braces)!! These are cheaply available on Ebay so no need to hand over large sums to you know who!!!!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
