Stiff gear
 

I've got a 2004 1200GS with 180,000k on the clock and recently and only occasionally going from 6th to 5th and sometimes 5th to 4th means using a bit of a stamp. No strange noises and it appears sufficient oil so the question is, is something catastrophic in the offing or can I drift gently on until I get back to the UK? I hope to be crossing into the southern US, AZ/NM in about a week so I will have BMW shops around. Ride safe

Had this on my GS - the problem was the shaft between the gear lever and the linkage to the box. Stripped it and greased it and so far it has been OK. It happened more when the air temperature was high.

Yeah, same here, stripped it, gave it a clean and lubed with copper grease. Was fine then on. Dave.

On those I have seen and helped this problem was due to not good enough oil. We changed to Omega 690 80W/90 GL 7 - and problems were solved. Have about 10 of these cases. All suffered jamming shifting in traffic jam at summer. None of the "K-oilheads" had any trouble at temps below 60-55'F (15-10'C).
NB: this were on R75-100 and K75-R1150R/GS; no R1200 yet though...

Hi Guys, I've fixed the 'stiff' gear problem, it was the clutch lever adjustment screw it was coming undone so basically I ended up trying to change gear without the clutch disengaging, just remembered what they tried to thump into me when I was a baby in the RAF, 'Don't assume, check', sometimes you feel a right dipstick. Funny it was only on the way down the box though. Anyway now thats fixed I've got another fuel leak. Maybe the bike is trying to tell me something. Ride safe.
