steering head bearing races

'89R100GS
learned a great trick today! Have you ever tried to remove the bearing races which are pressed into the steering head? They can't be reached with a drift to hammer them out, and a typical gear-puller won't do, so what do you do? Got a welder? Weld a small bead to the inside face of the race. When the weld cools, it effectively shrinks the race enough to easily pry out with a screwdriver. Tried this today, and it works like a dream!
Thanx to Shail at Shails BMW in Vancouver,BC.
