g/s 80 rear shock

i,m looking for the rear shock of my g/s 80 paris dakar ,the monolever
i want to know if the (Rear shock absorber to fit R100GS or R80GS. a Bilstein unit with dial-in damping adjustment as fitted to GS models from '91 onwards,can fit on my bike or not

Sorry, late GS shock is completely different from the G/S shock - it's much longer.

I believe inexpensive replacements are available from Hagon in the UK, or Works Performance in the US make a great, custom tuned shock, (that's what I use, link on the links or sponsors page) or Ohlins are also good.

well you know in egypt you can hardly get nothing for the bike ,and my rear shock is almost dead, and i didnt finish the bike yet (almost a year now) pffffffffff .
i will check in your lovely site if i can find used cheap one,

I dont know if this is any help, but I have put one of these shocks on my G/S and it is brilliant compared with the original unit. It even has adjustable damping that works.

Mine was around 450 AUD or about 270 Euro new.

An Ohlins here is at least three times that amount. So it was good value. More than the bike was worth.

I believe they bought the Koni Licences and are made using Koni patterns, which explains the name.

Sorry Omar, none of them are it.

First three are all the R80GS, not G/S
Last one is for the street bike.

Haynes imho is best after market manual, but none are as good as the factory one. Aftermarket manuals have ERRORS in them, especially on torque values. CAREFUL!

A Haynes and factory is ideal. Haynes tends to explain better, factory book is more likely to be absolutely correct.

What year is your bike? Engine number?

i did alot of work on the bike (almost one year ,and its very hard to find any thing in egypt )
i belive its 1987(as the egyptian license written)

Checked your serial number in the BMW parts catalog, it's one of the very last of the G/S models.

It could have been sold in 87, and registered as that year, but I THINK it's technically an 86. Anyway, I just wanted to be sure it was a G/S not a GS, as there is a BIG difference. One of the differences being the rear shock.

You DO have to think about what it is you want to do with the bike. If just riding it around lcoally, no big loads, almost any shockj will do fine. IF you want to take it travelling with the usual big load, you need a quality, high end shock, or the shock WILL fail, causing lots of grief and even more expense when you destroy other components as a result of the failure.

For local riding, I like simmo's suggestion of the ikonsuspension shock.

For serious travel, it's a Works or Ohlins, or possibly a Wilbers.

Here in France, EMC and FOURNALES (they are specialised in planes shock absorbers!) have a good reputation and are much cheaper then WP and OHLINS.
I have a EMC on my R80G/S, they have also a very good service.
EMC and FOURNALES only make shock absorbers with oil. Around 400-500 euros.
A swiss friend has got one on his R80G/S and told me about WILBERS (made in Germany) : they are excellent and also much cheaper than WP and OHLINS. They do shock absorbers with oil and or with gas cartridge. Around 400-700 euros depending if it’s oil or oil and gas.

I changed the original BMW for one with gas assistance and worked in a superb way.
