Spares and Issues for 2013 BMW F700 GS
 

We are planning a RTW trip out via Asia and back via South and North America and are interested, for the model of bike x 2 we are taking, if anyone has thoughts on what spares they have found useful and any issues that they have become aware of on the bike we should look out for. The bikes are ex dealer demo bikes with a few thousand miles on them.

I am currently in South Africa after travelling from the UK along the west coast of Africa. I brought a new F800GS Adventure at the end of June and left by the end of August with 3k miles. I now have 21k miles and the issues i've had are a puncture, headlamp bulb, left hand heated grip, head bearings and breakages from the bike ending up on it's side. The heated grip and bearings were replaced in South Africa under warranty.

For spares, i brought a length of wire, replacement inner tubes, two fuel filters and an air filter. The K&N air filter was advertised as fitting, did not fit on my F800 so i gave it away. I gave one of the fuel filters to a friend who needed to service their R1200 motorcycle so i have one for a service if i can't find a dealer.

For tools, my tool kit which contained Torx drivers for the bike, a couple of spanners to adjust the chain, a multi-meter, some patches, tyre leavers and a compressor. I fitted a scottoiler to help extend the life of the chain - which has worked for me on other motorcycles.

I went for the minimal approach - any spares i brought would not be the right ones and weigh me down unnecessarily. If there was something i needed that i couldn't sort out locally, i'd stop somewhere and get it shipped.

As long as your consumables are newish (break pads, chain, tyres), there should be very little you need for many miles of easy touring. If you are harder on your bike, your experience may vary...

For our 2009 F800gs we carried fuel pump, wheel bearings, brake pads, spare tubes, oil filter, & a fair bit of tools, patches, lubes & whatnot. In 67,000km we also had to replace the steering head bearings, air filter, chain (with a chain breaker - that was interesting) tires of course...oh and the left mirror which got stolen;) the fuel pump was the biggest pain we did not anticipate. Jeff, my husband, has a whole long post on the HUBB but you can get a generic spare vs BMW's $500 fuel assembly. Ours conked out multiple times probably from crappy petrol.

Appreciate the time taken to post the responses. We will use your input to assist in the selection of tools and spare parts to take. I guess in 12 months we will know if we made the right choice.
