Saddle Sore

Touratech seats are bloody expensive here in the UK - I had a quote for £267 GBP for a single seat with rear plate for my 1989 R100 GS. Do they make a big difference? I'm thinking of getting the seat installed with a gel pad to replace the foam or maybe I should just leave things alone. Perhaps I should splash out on the Touratech seat - decisions, decisions, decisions...

I really like the idea of the PD style seat (single seat with a rack where the pillion would normally sit) - has anyone had a go at buidling a DIY version of one of these?

Looking forward to hearing from you guys...

It mightn't sound very safe but in our relatively uncluttered roads, I either stand on the pegs or squat on the tank every 10 kms (for 10 secs) and can bare any seat all day. Stretching the legs out over the heads on the 1150 GS also helps.

Hi Fuzzy,

Be carefull ordering a seat. I did this 4 month's ago and I am still regreting it. The seat (Touratech) was not good at all becourse it changed the seating position, making it very unconfortable driving the bike. I have send it back (cost a lot) but still dont't have my money back. Creditcard company does not help a bit. All in all, I have no money and no seat.

If you buy a new seat, you have to try it first... It's like buying new shoe's.. You need to fit them.

Hi mmaarten

I'm struggling on this one. I thought about adapting the stock seat - but doesn't seem to fit very well with the HPN/Acerbis BIG tank that I've bought.

I cannot find anyone in the UK who can supply a decent solo seat - certainly not one I can try before I buy.

It seems I have can either go for the HPN or Touratech solo seats OR buy a PD style seat direct from BMW (if they still stock them) OR get one specially made for my bike.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the Touratech seat - but your experience has put me off this idea!

Any suggestions anyone?

Hai Fuzzy,

I had my seat altered by Gerd Jungbluth in Germany (near Aachen, the Dutch, Belgium, German border)
Until now I am very satisfied. He make's the seat exactly as you want it. (I even have a gel-pad inside http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif)
Take a look at: WWW.MOTORRAD-SITZBAENKE.DE

It works easy, you make an apointment (by email of phone) and drive there with the bike, he make's it as you want it, and you drive back again... If you are not completely satisfied, just go back and he alters it again for you.

You can also send the seat by mail and add a discription of what you want.

Hi, where abouts are you in the UK, a friend of mine near Southampton makes one off seats to your design and he does a bloody good job, made a seat for my R80 when I was dispatching and I could ride all day every day. Regards Chris

I wouldn't bother with the PD seat, I have one on my R100GS and, although the rack space is useful, the seat's not very comfy - see my 'Rhino Alert' post from a couple of weeks ago.

Hi ChrisK

Can you send me details of your contact in Southampton please?

A sheepskin (wool attached)makes a bloody comfortable seat. either trim to size and fit grommets or just throw over.

Being too cheap to buy custom seats, I've found pads (I had one made by a guy here in the US) made of the stuff they use for burn victims works very well for me and costs less than $75US. Other people swear by sheepskins and even those bead things cab drivers use. Guess it all depends on your bottom end.
