still wobbling and now crunching but still going. done 4200km. found a reliable garage to have a look tomorrow.

Crunching... I fear you've pushed your luck. I hope there is no serious damage or it's new RWD time

Hopefully they can open the final drive…
Flange is heat fitted to the central axle.
I am not sure what is the bearing type you need to get fitted in.

Well the BMW garage I managed to make in Windheok Namibia didn't have the parts. It would take a week to get them from South Africa by which time they would have closed for Christmas break. I did a final drive oil change and found a very minute amount of metal in the oil so I pressed on to Cape Town. Got the guys at BMW there to have a look but they weren't much help either. They said it would take 3 days to fix it and cost between $700 and $ 800. I researched the bearing cost, needle and main came to $200. I decided to fix it myself when I get the bike home. I got the number of a tow truck and rode the final 200 km to cape Agulas the southern most point of Africa. I even managed to ride it back to Cape town. Over all I did 6000km+ with the bearings damaged. These are one tough bikes for sure. It's now in a box and heading out to sea. I'll strip it down when I get it back home, cant wait to see what damage has been done.

By the time you get these bearings changed, I fear it will be too late to save it.

The bearings will have seized to the bevel pinion shaft and the shaft usually gets destroyed trying to remove it. And that pinion shaft (if I remember correctly), is unavailable from BMW.

You can still change the bearings but it will be putting good parts onto bad and they will fail prematurely.



I hope I'm wrong....... You need to sit down and work out how much these repairs are going to cost in parts and labour. It might be cheaper to buy a compete new or PROFESSIONALLY reconditioned rear wheel drive.

If the bearings are changed and the the job isn't' done 100% correctly, that play will come back in 10,000 miles.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
