Rattling gearbox on R1100GS
Rattling gearbox on R1100GS '94

Im hanging around in Mexico now and its getting worse and worse. First you could hear it while ideling, now in all gears. It sounds like: tshik tshik tshik .. I took of the back weel and turned through all gears by hand on the plane which holds the screws for the weel (the engine not running of cause :-) and clutch engaged). Except the first gear all seems to be all right. No noise and no rough feeling while turning. Must be something on the clutch system! Any idea how for I con go on this. Need expert meenings and good advice what to do.

You should post info on miles and history of sound. Does it go away when clutch is pulled? Things to check that would be quick fix... Clutch lever adjustment, tranny fluid level. Short of pulling the bike apart, you could try some good synthetic oil in the tranny. You could even try to fill it with just a little extra to make sure that the front of the tranny is getting plenty of lube. If you have to drain the fluid, check for metal on the drain plug...

Ok here is more:

- milage of the Gearbox: 62000 (102000 Km)
- Sound started 5000 miles ago (8000 Km) while engine ideling.
- sound stopps id clutch is engaged
- ideling sound got worse emediatly after last oil change (all the oils)

I had similar problems due to a bearing on the input shaft of the 5 speed. I rode it for about 8500 miles. No problems, just noisy. Good synthetic oil helped. I had 65000 miles on mine as well. Same idea, when the clutch was in the noise was gone, but in neutral and in all gears the noise was constant. I think there is a replacement for the bearing that will get rid of the problem, but you have to pull the tranny and get the new type of bearing. I found there was an increasing amount of metal on my drain plug, and was instructed by some BMW mechanics to over fill the fluid and ride on! I was on a trip at the time, and unless you feel the noise is really bad, I think it sounds a lot like my problem. Good luck.

I overfilled it and go on. New bearings? Well, in Guadalajara or Mexico DF they should be able to do that :-)

PS: I brained about the whole thing. The noise is connected to the revs. So its very likely a bearing in the input shaft of the gearbox.

UPDATE

Got my gearbox fixed in Guadalajara. Got the whole shaft out of a cracked box with roundabout 1000 miles on it (rear joints to the backframe cracked ... the ususal ... en Mexico hay muchos topes). The parts where for free ... but the working time ... I don't want to talk about how much I paid :-(

but hey ... I'm on the road again ...
