R80GS Basic silencer

A daft question, how do you know if the silencer on your bike is defective (baffles gone)? I have a keihan system but the stock BMW silencer, it looks ok, no rust , leaks etc on the outside but the exhaust is noisy especially under acceleration

The Keihan "Y" WILL make it louder. If you get a bit of "burble" on slowdown when just blipping the throttle, its probably toast.

I put a BSM Y and end can in mine (r100GS), and its nice now. Motor feels smoother too... The Keihan Y is more of a T and does nothing good... IMPO of course.

I have a Keihan silencer. It makes a horrible high pitch rattle. Baffles loose. You'll know if you have that problem.

Went that way almost as soon as i put it on. Keihan have offered to fix it, but i have to send it to them. I had a Laser Produro before that, which was great.

Also, there seems no appreciable difference in power or torque with the various exhaust set ups.

The original BMW silencer on my R80GS had a stainless body with mild steel baffles which rotted out after about 12 years, a similar age to yours now I would guess. Why they never made the whole system out of stainless is a mystery but I how have a complete Keihan system on both an 80GS and G/S, both I find to be good.
