R80G/S speedo ??
During my search for a R80G/S I came to realize that most of the Original BMW speedo's on this model broke at around 30,000 miles.
So are there reliable Original replacements available or do I need to shell out big bucks for a touratech IMO? Are their any bicycle computers that can be hard wired in and that will stand the vibration?
Will a R65 or R100g/s speedo for 37/11 gear ratio work? Cheers, Peter

I'm sure the speedo on mine was made in italy. If italian radar speed displays are to be belived my indicated 110kph came up as 90 kph...which means I rode across russia at 80kph...no wonder it took so long . Sometimes the needle remains parked at about 60kph after a ride...generally when hot, Gbox oil levels correct. I will get a bicycle one when I get motivated.

Sigma cycle comps work perfect. (make sure right model to cope with speed, and avoid 'wireless' for obvious reasons. OE BM item is KAK - don't think they're reinvented it ?
You can buy about 8 cycle comps for price of new BM item, and you get luxury of av speed ride time etc etc. Even if I had a functioning R100GS speedo, I'd put one on as backup. You can get a light from sigma if concern for reading at night, or rig up your own LED to suit. Serch web for fitting, several items on ways to do it, I've lost my links to the ones I found

Hi All,

For those who have given up on BMW speedos, you might want to consider using a Endurance digital speedo, not an IMO (which is too pricey to me).

I fixed one last year and rode from Singapore to Europe (thru snow,rain,heat etc) and it is still functioning well.
At about US$75 ,I think it is worth every dollar.

The problem with the Sigma and other electronic speedo's is the lack of a light for night riding. Yes, you can rig up a little LED or such, but I'm not convinced that will be sufficient (tiny screen). In terms of other BMW speedo's, any meter set for the correct rear drive ratio 37/11 should work, it will just be a pain mounting it. I have such a unit off of an R80ST. I will be trying to fabricate a mount for it - another pain, but one I can solve and be done with!

Never did find the stock one accurate either.... same for my R100GS.

Hi,
bm r80g/s speedos....not a bullet proof part,
trip usually fails pretty early on,(5 off)
main speedo lasts ok ?
i have fitted a sigma targa M(latest version of targa titan)which has larger main speed figures,
the sigma reading "seem"to lag behind the bmw speedo until a constant speed is reached,
the sigma calibration figures don't "agree" with the bm speedo , but easily altered to suit...but who is right?
best checked with a gps?
overall,a neat bit of kit,clock and km/miles
back up for not big money

My original speedo trip packed up at 25k, but who knows if that was the first time, fitted a new one and now has 33k on it and still working fine but I did fit a Halfords cycle computer as well for a back up, it cost £9.99 but has now failed after 2 years, should I ask for my money back, as for not being back lit, well don't ride at night.
