F650 GS Stator

I have a 2010 F650 GS...40,000kms. No problem with the stator yet but I have heard many 650's have this problem around 50,000kms.
I am in Argentina now and thinking of changing it before it goes. No fun if your bike breaks in some remote place.
BMW only sells the complete generator...but I believe one can buy just the stator.
If so any recommendations on where and what type to get in Canada or the US.

Wife and I were stuck with our F800GS and a burnt stator in Katy, TX, after riding 41k miles around the world and with 1k to go (little over 50k on the odometer). The closest bike shop didn't have the OEM part in stock. Called around to other shops in Houston area. No luck. Asked about motor shops that may be able to rewind. "Not in the Houston area." Only option to get us back on the road immediately was to strap a $1k Honda generator to the top case and run wires to the battery terminals. We decided have to have a stator shipped.

Wife found Rick's online. Cheaper than OEM and shop knew the name so we overnighted the part and it was installed next day. Got us home and has continued working without issue. Have maybe 4k miles on it now.

Stator issues seem to be a common occurrence in many bikes not just the BMW. I've been reading many posts ( not on this site ) about using series voltage regulators instead of the shunt type. I won't go into explaining the difference, as you can find that out, but it is safe to say that the series units are much easier on the stators as they just allow the current to flow that the system is calling for instead of the shunt type that shorts the excess to ground which generates heat in the stators. Most if not all our bikes are equipped with the shunt type.

From what I've read if you're stator system is a 3 phase ( like Harley, Suzuki DL650 or many other bikes ) and the total stator output is less than 35 amp something like a Polaris Regulator Part # 4012941 might work for you. Also Compufire # 55401 has been used with success.

Just another option and might be worth checking out. The above are not a plug and play as you likely will have to change the connector plugs or use new ones.

I changed (only) the stator on my F800GS at approximately 60000 kms. It was not defective, but the voltages on the 3 phases were not equal. Due to a longer journey I decided to change it before it might fail. I bought this one Buy New Stator BMW F800 (07-12) F800GS (09-12) from a german ebay shop. Testing it about 8000kms, it worked well like an OEM part. Additionally I changed the regulator from the original shunt to a series type: Roadstercycle CE605SB series regulator/rectifiers for Sport bikes
It fits at the same place like the OEM regulator. Connecting is no problem, if you can handle a soldering iron. First testing and measurements on the first 1000 kms are looking very well. The next 7000kms I will test the stator and its regulator on the gravel roads in South America...
