2/4/11 update
Found out today that my points can that was shipped from CA on the 24th was sent priority mail and should have been here 4 days ago. Seems that it is probably lost unfortunately. If so and as this is my second attempt at getting a points can I am going to look at it as the airgods are against me installing points on this bike. If it does not show up by the time I go to install the electrics, I will stay with the HALL sensor and someday gets Rick's Alpha system. Sorry, no gloves only some mildly dirty hands and a fumes induced video before I left So, here is a photo of the 40 SS spokes that go to the front R100gs wheel. Any reason why I should hold onto them? I can't relace a wheel. In the early 1980s I was lucky enough to modify a 1979 R65 to an 800cc using the pistons and barrels out of a 90S, the piston skirts needed a quick skim of about 3mm or was it 13mm (cant remember). Fantastic torque, the tyres would lose grip before the engine ever lost power on dirt tracks or in snow or mud - my wife was often needed to provide the weight for extra grip!!. Swapped the swingarm for a /7 which was about 50mm longer and tilted the engine up at the front to accomodate the longer rear suspension travel. Had to fit a new clutch after the first outing as I managed to rip the centre out of the old one. Other mods included long travel front forks - I think they were Marzocchis with air pumps, 21" front wheel laced onto the original single disk hub with Brembo caliper, Konis on the back end with longer travel, a 32 litre long range fuel tank - managed to do the Birdsville Track without a refuel, a /7 seat which was renowned as being the most comfortable seat that BMW ever produced. Pot racks for extra carrying capacity - 6 tin esky, standard Krauser panniers and racks except for a cross brace at the rear to stop the frames cracking. |
That's what's great about these old bikes. Simple and easy to mod. The Airhead is the ultimate swiss army bike :thumbup1:

Got a call from Works today. Turns out the shock had some MAJOR miles on it and needed a complete rebuild. No biggy though, glad to find out now than when I'm loaded in east woop woop and the shock blows. I had to forgo the longer hose with a 90 at the end to save the additional $80. I also got my powdercoat today. Overall very good. A couple issues like my VIN getting slightly covered and a few flanges getting covered. Nothing a little patience and a Dremel won't take care of. I heard a certain chemical works too. 2/8/11 No photos, sorry
Got my front r100gs wheel and lock plate in the mail today.....BUT NOT MY REAR RACK, WTF!!! I have never had such a hard time buying from someone in my entire life. I'm giving the guy 48 hours to respond. If I have to take it as far as Paypal/CC dispute I will let everyone know who he is and to avoid him at all cost. He's not on HUBB, but owns a motorcycle shop near Toronto. I started the work in the shed with putting the drive shaft back together. The shaft had VERY little wear on the cogs and the spring was good and tight so figured it was a waste to replace it. I made one mistake; I left some screws in the holes on the frame...stupid me now the ones that are left are coated and the other are history Guess it's time for a trip to hardware store and a supply of common metrics. I mounted some of the harness. This includes the fusebox, and the relay boxes. The ICU got put into the spares box as I am installing the points bean can. I was going to reuse Ricks VR that I installed on the old system, but the one that came with the Omega is a bit bigger so went with that one. Made a deal with Wirespokes. Trading my stainless R100GS wirespokes to him for a correction to my Euro r80GS speedo and a correct mileage of 55500mi. I figure it's worth it to me and saves some coin. This was not a priority to me, but things worked out. Well that's it for today...I'm sick as hell right now...Should not be doing anything but sleeping. Bethany keeps me coming to the shed though as she's such a temptation..... |
2/9/11 update
I've been sick with the flu lately so by rights I should take a break and not tromp down to the shed and reassemble a motorcycle in sub-freezing temps...then again I'm determined so that's what I did. I bought some aircraft remover today to strip the PC off of a few areas that didn't need PC like inside the shifter shaft and linkage ball. Worked well. The PC was also used too heavily over my VIN making it almost unreadable. I may tape it off and strip the PC off of the VIN and just apply regular paint. As the AS works so well I will probably strip my fork legs of the yellow and PC them white. I assembled the levers today as well....oddly I misplaced a pile of M4 and M5 screws and bolts Really stupid, but i guess I'll just replace them with allen bolts As listed below, or above depending on your layout, I IDed the deadbeat seller who shorted me my rack. Still waiting on my reassembly hardware from MAX. Apparently some stuff was BO. Still no photos...sorry |

2/13/02 update
No, you didn't miss a day update...I kind of lost a day...not much of a memory of yesterday. I hate the flu. Pretty all that happened yesterday is I hiked to the shed and grabbed the timing cover to drop in my parents basement to bring it up to temp to paint. Figure it'll be covered by the PD engine cover and skid plate so it really only needs basic paint. I ended up using Rustolium professional gloss black to paint it today. Not a concorse finish, but not a concorse bike either. Today I was lucky enough to score a RTP switch housing on Ebay for my aux lights and Heated grip switches. Still need the switch but that's easy to find. Well after not doing crap for a week as I was sick I finally recovered enough to take advantage of the 40F+ temps and do some serious ass hauling in the shed. I mentioned painting the timing cover. Not the best paint job, but works for something that will be covered. No photos....I had my hands full Reassembled the swingarm to the FD. Turns out the PC guy coated the matching surface so I had to strip that down. Although not needed I put a smear of gasket goo on the surfaces, blue loctite on the bolt threads and torqued it down. Because of all the discussion a while back about neutral switches leaking I hit mine preemptively with West Systems 2 part epoxy, coated it real good. Messed around with the pod housing and put it on. Also put the handlebars on....dumb ass idea as within 10 minutes I had hit my head good enough to see stars and draw blood I may be pulling them till I have to work on them again. The rest of the day was spent cursing at my Canadian friend who sent me a r100gs wheel that must have spent the last 5 years buried in a stockyard. Black dust? Seriously? I'm getting it clean, but my fingers are bleeding doing so Well off to clean my wounds and have some barley therapy......beer |
There were duff handlebars fitted to early R80GS models - they had an oblong hole machined in between the saddle clamps for the handlebar wiring to pass through. There was a recall on the handlebars, but just check you have the correct bars as they were prone to breaking in half after a few hours riding on a corrugated road.
You've got to hunt down a Heinrich 42 litre long range tank!! Looks so much more macho than that piddly 16litre!!! Plus you can deliver fuel to remote places. |
