R1200gs, Oil Change Problem

I recently did an oil change on my R1200GS Adv 06 - Put in the noted 4l's of oil as indicated and have almost 300cc of oil too much in the crank - it if foaming in the site glass when I start and the glass is full.

Simple solution is to drain the offending oil and measure with the site glass. I want to know if anyone has had this problem - and why? So I can understand it.

I drained it for at least an hour as I worked on the bike - rocked it back and forth - replaced the oil filter - warmed up the bike. Still too much oil when they said 4 l's.

Just so I know I am not missing anything. (BMW does not want you to change the oil yourself of course and I am rightly pissed at the feeble manual so I am getting the shop manual)

Thanks,

Dean

BMW uses a thermostat in the oil...it's critical you get it FULLY up to temp before draining, so the oil cooler can fully drain whislt the thermostat is open...it also takes a while for the heads to drain all the oil back to the sump.

the sump level is pretty forgiving...better low than high...reason:
high level can get frothed by the crank throws, and both pistons move in and out together which causes a wide swing in crank case pressure...hense, the breather must be clear and not kinked or such.

the only real "danger" of high oil is it gets blown/sucked into the intake box and possibly in the intakes...which dirties/hampers the port and polish, and more critically, can carbon the valves...possibly foul a plug. less likely is the filter element gets wet and won't pass proper air.

there should be a drain plug at the rear of the intake box...pull it out...if it's wet, it's sucking oil and the level is too high.

IF and I say IF that's the case, take the filter off and drain that much out...and see where you're at.

if you had the cooler empty to begin with, 4 qts should be fine...if you had some capacity hidden in the cooler from closed thermostat, you may have too much in.

Thanks,

I suspected as much as an oil cooler thermostat and given the information lacking in the manual was kind of suspect.

I have my supply of "crush" washers so will warm up the bike - drain the oil and take a measure just to be sure - then put it back in proplerly at 3 ltrs - see where it sits and top it up from there to get my true measure.

Thanks again,

Dean
