R1150GS rear shock
Is the factory rear shock on a new R1150GS OK for a two up RTW or should I replace it? Very little if any off roading will be involved. We estimate our combined weight including gear to be about 180kg.
Of course BMW tells me the factory rear shock is good for this, but I want an unbiased opinion.

Replace it with a good one. The stock shock is unlikely to last, and doesn't work as well anyway. You will be surprised how much better the bike handles with a good shock. Preferably one on both ends if you can afford it.

I've been riding my GS1150 with front and rear White Power shocks and am very happy, on track-days as well as two-up on country roads. I find the rebound much better and bike is more stable at all speeds. In addition it also gives you an added sense of security (and comfort!) as you're not going to be getting any way near tolerance levels as on the original Showa. To be honest, in a recent article in MOTORRAD (German mag) dedicated entirely to comparing 6 shocks on the 1150 the Ohlins came first and the WP was 3rd.

I had the rear shock replaced under warrenty,
the new one sprung a leak before it got of the bench no pre-load.Anyway it's nice to have some damping,
I'd be a bit wary going RTW on showas based on my experience,

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
