R1150GS fuel tank
 

I recall reading on one of the GS lists somewhere that I can improve the speed of filling my R1150GS (standard) fuel tank by drilling a few vent holes in the top of the tube that sits in the filler neck.

I am sure however that BMW put the tube there for a purpose (other than to delay filling and reduce capacity that is) and I assume that it is some sort of restrictor to prevent over-filling and thus ensure that the fuel has room to expand without pouring out of the breather as the temperature rises.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I think it's just the designers at BMW expecting the average user to be devoid of a brain. If you fill it on its centre stand and then leave it on its side stand in the sun for several hours you could be in trouble.
With the mod it's debatable how much faster it'll fill or how much extra you'll get in (lets face it it doesn't take that long to fill a standard 22l tank). If you're really that bothered consider getting a bigger tank.
