R1100 GS - unable to rev properly after minor fall

Hi everyone,

I had a minor accident with my new '96 GS falling on sand at around 20 mph and after this whenever I open the throttle when it gets to around 5000 rpm it stumbles (sorry my non-techincal description) as if it was out of gas.

If I fully open the throttle it does the same even at lower revs. It is very annoying and nobody could tell what this was. I checked the cables, hoses, levers, everything is place...

Somebody told me that it should be the tip-over sensor. Could that be the case?

I went today to the local BMW dealer asking for the tip-over sensor and they told me they didn't know what this was.

Tomorrow I will take the bike to the shop to have it checked, but I am very curious what exactly could it be...

Thanks!

Mihai

If it were your tip over sensors you'd almost certainly be not able to start the bike.

For starters I'd check the all the electrical connectors leading into the cylinder heads. BMW conveniently stick some of these on the outside of the bike (near the air intakes - the black plastic tubes). These are designed to be pulled apart - check they're located properly?

If this doesn't help, was there any other visible damage? Are rocker covers mangled? Do you have any leaks anywhere? Are your battery terminals all tight etc? HT lead connectors seated properly onto the sparks?

Failing this, have your throttle bodies balanced. Im not sure how your spill could affect this, but it could be an issue. Suggest you do this after all checks for electrical gremlins.

From what you've given i'd err that it was more electrical than mechanical, as i've experienced this before and it was the revs causing resonance on a connector which then made poor running.

Good luck!

I would definitely ask this question on the Gspot subforum on ADVRider, people there really know the GSs very well (not that Nomadic does not, but you'll probably get more responses at ADVRider).
