R100GS Speedometer
 

looking for some advice on best course of action with my speedo, failed odometer and trip meter that only works when it wants. Has just done over 100,000 Klm.
Worth repairing or would a electronic replacement like the touratech IMO computers be the go? The cockpit fairing kit, with IMO and warning light panel comes to about a grand australian and supposedly saves 10 KG from the bike.

Any ideas / opinions ? Thanks, Scott

Have you checked the wire?

It might be possible to get a used one, or get someone to overhaul the one you have.

I have an IMO100R300 and I’m not happy with the build-quality. On the other hand it is a nice unit and gives lot of information.
On my R80GS there was quite some job to install it. All wires were to short and I had to add wires for tacho and oil-temp. For some bikes there are ready made adaptors.
If you buy it you should also install the remote, it makes the unit much more usable.

The warning lights are a pretty nice setup but the gen-light sometimes flicker at high RPM. According to Touratech this is a “common problem”. I will probably find a solution for this next autumn; it’s annoying when driving in the dark.

Is there any particular problem with build-quality of your IMO? I'm considering buying the same unit and would like to know every detail. Cheers.

My problems:
-Air temperature suddenly dies
-If the unit is in direct sunlight for a while (when parking) it’s impossible to read the LCD-display for the next 30 minutes

…. On a friends unit the display dies from time to time.

I bought the unit used (very cheap) and can live with the problems, lots of funny functions :thumbup1:

Cycle computer (Sigma BC800 or similar). Cheap and even if speedo is working I's add one for back-up (the speedo will die!) Only draw back is it's not lit for night riding. I'd stick one on any bike I own, great add-on.

I would just replace the speedo with a new unit from BMW.
The Touratech instruments are very nice at face value but when you check behind is made out of real crap components and it is a nightmare to keep it working with all the terrible connectors used by Touratech. The small box that needs to be mounted in the dash reminds me of a soap box and unless you cable tie it, or wrap it up with insulating tape the lid keeps on popping of and the silly connectors does not fit securely so they fall out purely from vibrations on bad road conditions.
A German company Sixo makes more robust instruments at better prices but even so everybody I spoke to that have used computers mentioned that next time they will rather fit analogue instruments. They are a lot more reliable and much easier + faster to read make it safer.

When I bought my 100 GS it had the same speedo problems including very inaccurate speedo reading.

I simply use a Garmin GPS V on the handlebar bracket and it gives me all the info that I need.

Yesterday I took the speedo apart and cleaned and dried it out, and realligned one of the little cogs inside. Hopefully tomorrow I can test to see if it is working again. Even if it does I will still use the Garmin V
