R100GS right hand switch cluster failure (prob also applies to other modern BMWs)

Going on a long trip? This is another point of failure to check in advance.

Fortunately mine failed not far from home, but it could have been a disaster. The indicator cancel button stopped working. I realised after a near miss at a roundabout. Then as I turned into an unlit road it all went dark. No headlights. Fortunately I could still get full beam, blinding other drivers.

The switch cluster was full of gunk, and some of the wires had come loose. The manual says they can't be repaired, due to the position of the starter button. I bought a new replacement (£90). However, considering the number of presses and the bad weather it would have been through in 97,000 miles, I'm not unhappy with its durability.
