R100GS - fitting the 43l HPN tank
 

Hi!

I have an R100GS - and am fitting the HPN tank.

After searching the HUB, I am still facing a couple of issues:

1 - electrics - some of the boxes (whatever they are, fuses and stuff) arein the way - I've moved the indicator one, as suggested by HPN, But I was still left with a couple more that seemed in the way. Is there any problem ahead of me if I simply relocate them? Would be great to get some experience feedback on this.

2 - the fairings - it's not a surprise, as it is clearly stated by HPN that they would need to be cut somewhat. But before I get my carving tools out, would anybody have made some pictures that could help me decide how much to cut out. Also, what's the best tool to cut it?

As additional questions, what's the best way to paint it (it's the paintable version).

The fairings, I assume are the side covers extending from the cockpit sidewise along the fuel tank? I shortened the side covers with a saw so that I had enough space to fit a Touratech tank bag with the 2 sidebags hanging left & right from the bag.

I just fitted the HPN 43L tank on my R80GS, but did not have to remove any of the electric gadgets under the tank. Maybe mine is fitted a bit higher. The front mounts are secured as high as possible under the crossbar of the frame, the rear mount only fits in one position.
If you have one of the later models with the cockpit supported by the main tube you will also have to extend the tube somewhere near where it is fixed to the main frame just above the crash bar by approx. 7 centimeters, because the HPN tank goes further down on the sides.

I'll see that I can find a digital camera in the neighbourhood if you need any more details by photo.

I will try to move the front holders a bit higher, but suspect that it's not the solution - When you add shock, vibration to the weight of 43l of juice, this thing better rest on as much as it can, not only the holders.
That's why the tank is also provided with a rubber piece, on which the tank is supposed to rest.

The R100GS has different fairings (that how I call these cover on the side indeed)from the 80GS I believe.

So I will continue sharpening my tools!

I know the feelings you're going through :-0 - did same short while ago - in fact just after HU meet ;-). If you want I can speak to you on phone, I got very good advice from Simon (Sorebums) and can mail on some pics if helpful - I have your email, assuming you are the guy I think ? PS you'll remember ours isn't a PD though, but same except fairing

Well, actually the piece of rubber is only to make sure the tank doesn't plopstraight on the frame if the mounts get loose and slip down, so as not to damage the plastic tank.

The tank must be able to move for about 1/2 centimeter. This is possible if it is only supported by the two rubber rings and the rear mount (with rubber washers).

Oh, and if you've still got the original Beemer front spings - scrap them and fit some White Power progressive springs instead.

Thanks to the help of all of the above and a few more I have completed the taks - it was fun, in particular the cutting, and cutting and cutting...

If anyones needs guidance, drop me an email - I've made pictures of how much I had to cut out, and that should be helpful for anyone who wants to take a shot at its fairings!

There is a pdf fitting guide on the HPN site but you need to click on 'accessories' then 'tanken.pdf' next to the picture of the tank.

Funny actually, but I originally helped them out with writing the english instructions.

One advice: if you do buy the tank, make sure you have the seat that goes along (unless you want to butcher your original seat) - there can be significant delays in delivering the adapted seats - you can alsways ride sitting on the battery of just standing, but buyer beware!

NB: this warning is more meant for last minute planner, which fraternity I'm member of...
