R100GS driveshaft replacement.....

Funny..the driveshaft I had had replaced in Lahore has died. Don't get me wrong, those guys in Pakistan got me back on the road and I am very, very grateful - full story at www.teawithbinladensbrother.com (shameless plug).

But does anyone out there know where I can get a reasonably priced replacement? Are they still available? Will I have to shoot my bike?

Lots of options for where to get them. Motorbins/Motorworks in the UK, BMWBoxer Supplies in Holland and several places in Germany.

None of them are cheap! May be worth getting an updated version with replaceable and greaseable UJ's. Also units are available with replaceable "cush" rubbers like BMW Boxer Supplies these.

Standard BMW item will cost you over £500 if you do not have a repairable exchange unit.

I changed mine before I went to India:smartass:

Cheers,

Thanks for these - That'll get me started. I'll check these out. Up to £500 though. Ouch. Need to sell a few more books....

The page below shows the sequence as it appears.

Hope you're trip to India was unforgettable too.

I am not sure of the validity of this claim but was told that BMW have not made any new shafts for several years and the ones they have are old stock where the grease has gone hard and are best avoided. The rebuildable one Motorworks sells sounds good.
I had mine rebuilt by Motorworks 7000 miles ago and so far so good but an thinking of a new one before going on tour next year.

Good luck with it.

There is another debate about it here.

Interesting. Are they still doing the rebuilds at Motorworks? Do they need the whole bike there - I live in France - or simply the damaged driveshaft?... and er, could you give me a rough idea of cost?

Will check out the other debate too. Thanks.

They only need the shaft but before it fails and is too badly damaged, it cost something over £100 a couple of years ago, I sent mine when it first developed a bit of play.

If its salvageable, Motoworks want £240 for a rebuilt unit.
At that rate, new the repairable type at £396 seems a good idea. You can also get a repair kit for £27. This gives you new UJ's, rubbers and circlips.

Where do I find the 'repairable type' for £396. I've got one in front of me at BMWboxersupplies.com for €599.00....?!

I stock the rebuildable one's in Australia for $550.00 AUS (£352) plus shipping.

£396.00 is the cost of a rebuildable prop. I fitted one to my R100GSPD ( 93 ) last year before a big trip around Europe.

It is slightly bulkier than the original, it fits....but their is a specific way it has to be fed into the casing.

Motorworks.

I have one on my 80GS from Keihan with no jetting changes and no discernable effects but others say they have noticed a drop in midrange power from fitting one, it depends who you listen to.
