R100 GS fuse question
 

I bought my R100GS used and did not get a owner's manual with it, so apologies for a very basic question: Which fuses should I use in the fuse box? I was using 7.5 in all three slots, but then someone told me I should have a 15A (or more than one) in there as well. But in which slot?

I appreciate any advice on this simple matter.

Hi Scott.
As long as you have not uprated anything like headlamp bulbs,then you would be well advised to retain the standard fuse ratings.Fuses are there for a reason,and will usually only blow because there is a fault with either an appliance or the wiring,and in both cases it's job is to protect the rest of the electrical system from damage(switches,relays,wiring loom,etc...).If you do ever get a blown fuse,always look for the cause BEFORE replacing the fuse or it will just blow again.NEVER replace with one of higher rating/an old nail/bit of alu foil as this is a very good way to set fire to the bike! Make sure the spare fuse holders arn't empty(that you have some spares),and leave well alone.If it ain't broke,don't fix it!

all four fuses should be 15A for the R80GS & 100GS.

This is a great topic! The Haynes manual states two 8 amp fuses. My bike came with 15 amp fuses, one of which preformed it's task admirally when i shorted out one of my signal lights. So, what is the proper BMW spec.? Does anyone have a factory manual they can consult?

Yes, it's confusing. I looked on the excellent online parts fiche provided by Max BMW (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fic...p?mospid=47915) and it lists both 15 A and 7.5 A fuses for the fuse box, but does not say which goes in which slot.

I have been running all 7.5 fuses because that is what the original owner had in there, but I have heard that the GS takes at least one 15A fuse. Vaufi above says all 15A, but I'm not sure that's correct. If they are all 15A, why does the parts fiche list a 7.5A fuse?

Can we have a definitive answer from someone out there with a factory manual or owner's manual?

his is from ”Betriebsanleitung R80R and R100R”, the book came with my R80GS Basic:

1 Stop light, instruments 15 A
2 Parking light, taillight 15 A
3 Hazard lights, Special equipment (clock?) 15 A
4 Turn signals, horn, heated grips 15 A

(The numbers are from left).

From the list it looks like the main light and a lot of other stuff in un-fused.. If the list is correct a 5 amp will do for #1, 2, 3, I’m not sure about #4.

Personally I don’t think it’s smart to use 15A fuses.
