Lowering the BMW R1100GS

Hi all,

I recently purchased a set of Hyperpro lowering spring kit for my 96 1100GS. After a week of riding here is my personal view and opinion:

I am 5'7" (170cm)/ 190Lbs (85Kg).

Pros:
a. I can now put both of my feet firmly on the ground. (30MM Drop)
b. The bike does not lean excessively when place on the side stand.
c. They are easy to replace.

Cons
a. It definitely changes the center of balance towards the rear.
b. Even with a full tank of fuel, and a tank bag it feels a bit light on the front fork.

I am taking it easy for the time being and learning to become one her again. She is my daily driver and I don't do any type of off road.

I hope this help someone looking at doing the same.

I did a similar thing when I had my BMWR 1150GSA.As you know, these bikes are quite tall.

I am 5 foot 6 inches, and again weigh about 85kg.

I went the Wilbers suspension route, and got the front and rear shocks made to drop the bike 25mm as well as being setup for my weight,riding etc.

I also got the seat reprofiled by a local car furnisher for about £60 that made it more comfy and dropped it by another 50mm.

Result

I could happily get one foot, flat on the floor or both down on tiptoes which suited me fine. the sidestand worked a hell of lot better....it always leant over too far as standard.

The bikes handling, from what I can remember was unchanged.

the centerstand, this really required a lot of physical effort to now use...I am quite strong, but this was just about the limit I could lift up with the bike having just a normal luggage load on it.

PS.

I still have those shocks, almost brand new as the bike was written off about 3 weeks after they were fitted.

Yep.

I forgot to write that down.
I does take a bit more strength to get the bike back on the center stand.

I only changed the springs. The shocks are the OEM standard from BMW.
