R 1100RT leaky pannier

Hi does anyone know how to stop the nearside pannier on my 1999 r1100rt from leaking when its raining. The seal hasn't gone on the box and i've got no idea where the water is coming in from but when i was in ireland this year it took on a lot of water overnight from a typical Irish small shower
Failing that does anyone know of an elasticated type waterproof outer bag that i can put over my panniers to add some from of rain barrier. Don't mind if they're not genuine bmw just want to stop my gear from taking an early bath.
thanks

Hi GIMLI 101,

If you look on ebay you will find inner bags for around £50.

To find where the water is coming in you can coat the inside of the pannier with talcum powder then give it a good hosing down, then dry off the outside, open up and hey-presto the source of the leak should be easy to see.

P.S you don't know anything about gearboxes do you? as I also had no replies to my thread. ( must be a RT thing )

Cheers,

Chris

Hi GIMLI 101

My 1100 panniers leak overnight on the left hand side, but only if the bike is on the side stand. I think it is that on the centre stand the water drains out of the bottom, but on the side stand it collects in the pannier lid. The pannier inner bags work well, and nothing gets wet on days of 200 miles of rain, on either side.

Have a good look around pannier mine leaked through a tiny hole melted by exhaust you could try putting it in the bath open and press down into the water see if any leaks show up may be worth a try

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
