Prepping the Fuel injection on a R1150GS
 

We are going to ride Argentina and Chile later this year: 3 months, Sept to Dec. Its a UK bike and will have a Y piece (with Lamda Probe) to save the cat from the risk of crappy fuel and to save a bit of weight, and I may stick on the Remus revolution can with or without baffle. (Without only because I like the noise, but the bike's longevity is the priority!)

My question is do I need to have the injection re-mapped to suit the Patagonian/Andean air and fuel. A Y piece and/or can will lean the mixture already and the added drop in O2 in the higher altitudes may put my bike's engine at risk. I don't want to whole a piston in the middle of the altiplano!!

What to do? Do I remap or not and what combination should I use?

Cat and Standard can?
Y piece and Standard?
Y piece and Remus (baffle in)?
Y piece and Remus (baffle out)?

No No No No. Firstly understand what you have.

Electronic Fuel Injection. With sensors for

Air pressure - it is inside the black box - so altitude changes are taken care off.

Lambda sensor - senses the air fuel ratio - so changes in the exhaust, air cleaner should be taken care off.

Note the lambda sensor will suffer permanent damage with leaded petrol. A new one will not be cheap. Not as much as a CAT.

You may like the noise, but what will the local Police, boarder guards think of it? Not to mention the hotel clerks.

I would keep the bike stock for a long trip like that. During the last really long winter in Munich I thought I'd modify my bike, just to keep busy apart from moving snow. I fittet a Y piece, Remus exhaust and K&N air filter on my 1150 GS. First couple of rides through town were fun, but on the first longer trip the noise gets to you. Then I started using ear plugs and now I am just ready to go back to stock again, or at least some of the parts. Take it for a longer ride before you set off!

The cat. converter doesnt like unleaded fuel, but how much of that are you going to get?

hi, i have a 05 gsa and when i bought it standard i swopped over to the y peice and remus titanium, which sounded great, but after a few months it became load and annoying and i too wore ear plugs. I have just taken it to my dealer in shipley west yorkshire and turned it back to satndard and am very happy.:biggrin3:

Regular Fuel Coding Plug
 

The only prep my '03 Adventure has for fuel is to buy the coding plug so that it can run on regular gas as opposed to premium. Even that I'm just bringing for emergency use. If I end up with leaded fuel at any time and ruin the catalytic converter I'll just get a new one when I get back. No sense shelling out for the Y-pipe if I don't need to. I'm with the others too on the noisy exhaust, don't do it.

I am on a 1150gs, two up as i type. Just come through 5000mtrs with the worst fuel you can by for a gs.
Everything worked fine apart from the potholes.
