Pot Racks
 

Does anyone have some plans/dimensions for Pot Racks for a R80 G/S. I will be making up some myself. I intend to put some small metal boxes on them for tools etc.

Dimensions, well no, but you can see an example on my bike.

There is a bracket (1" x 1/4" steel band) coming straight up from the bottom frame tubes to the back of the box, then splitting in two and going straight forward to the crash bars. Easy. Mount the box on rubber washers. I used 1/16" aluminum for the box and it's door. A mailbox lock works fine to lock it closed.

Have fun - make sure you make the door as big as possible - mine could have been bigger, and it would have been easier to get my tool kit in and out.

I like the looks of your forward tool boxes. I'm thinking about copying them on my PD. I'm not sure I have as much room between the stock tank and the cylinders though, so I may have to modify the shape.

One question about the mounting. The box and bracket seem pretty straightforward. However, how did you mount the bracket(strap) onto the lower frame and crash bars? It looks like you might have fabricated a clamp or bracket at the ends. How have they held up on the rough roads? Do you have any more detailed pictures of the tool box setup? Thanks for any suggestions.

When you use 1/4" x 1" band iron it holds up pretty well http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

All I did was run a strap straight down past the carbs to the frame and a little past it, drilled holes for a clamp formed by bending another piece of the same stuff that would go around the tube. Requires a welding torch of course to get tight enough bends.

One vertical bar and clamp at the back of the box, and two horizontal at the front on the crash bar.

I don't think I have any more pics, sorry, and since I'm in Europe at the moment no luck. Come to the CAN/USA West or Mexico meeting and see it for yourself! If needed let me know in a month (when I'm back) and I'll see about posting some new pics.

Of interest, is the additional fuel container from an older model Honda "postie" bike which has been mounted forward of the pot racks (he had one either side).
