oil cooler - a good idea in practice or ?

on the R100GS,the oil cooler mounted on the crash bar works effeciently,
if a hpn/acerbis tank is fitted then the oil cooler must be moved ....to in front of the engine,
with the hot engine directly behind i can't imagine there would be a very good air flow through the oil cooler and therefore oil cooler will not be working very efficiently
given this , is it worth fitting an oil cooler ?

Hi Bryan,
I have a GS100 Basic which comes without an oil cooler. I have never had any problem with overheating. A couple of years ago I took it on a trip around the Australian Outback where it was very hot. I had no problems there either.
I've heard a lot of overlanders remove them simply because they are vulnerable stuck out on the crash bar. So I would throw it if I were you.

Richard.

Check out some of the posts below, in particular http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000177.html - 'oil temperature'. Have you been monitoring your oil temperature? Just because the bike continues to run fine doesn't mean that it is getting the best protection from wear and damage. On the other hand, as they say 'results vary'. One thing to consider if you do relocate the oil cooler (which I would recommend based on the advise below) is installing an Acerbis or other front fender design that has vents to allow air through to the cooler mounted on the down tubes.

Hey, if you do deside to pull it off, let me know as I'd like to have one on my R80!

How did it go ?
What option did you chose ?
Of cause it is worth fitting an oil-cooler; need only to be a bit more creative -;)
Look at the street models - would that have worked?
I've considered many options before "I got an offer I could not refuse - Setrab Hydraulic coolers".

Give us an up-date on the cooler question you had in 2003.
