Good news, seriously! Absolutely innovative step from BMW this time. Very probably the best GS ever made in 20 years of it's history. A shaft drive touring motorcycle with a 1200cc engine that dry-weights 199kg!

But i dont think there aren't any 40+L Touratech tanks, engine guards and aluminium pannier frames available for it yet, or is there? As i understand the frame is completely different from previous R-GSes.

Hoping that the prices of used R1100/1150GS go down if it comes out too - planning to buy a used R11GS one that mounts TT and other third-party touring hardware well. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hey Grant Thanks for the R1200GS info and links. Very helpful. I'm right on the cusp of buying, it's taken three years to decide on a GS, and they throw the 1200 at me. Oh what to do now? If the specs continue to look as good as the photos well maybe I'll have to wait just a bit longer. Am really looking foreward to the SA testing next week for the real scoop.

Looks to me like they've solved my biggest beefs with the 11xxGS - weight and poor rear subframe.

The increased power is no biggie - anyone that needs more than the 11xxGS has is crazed... (speaking from an adventure touring point of view of course... http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif )

We'll have to wait and see about the other stuff - poor screen/buffeting, handling, gearbox, surging etc.

If I was looking to buy tomorrow, it would be a 1200GS over the 1150GS. Imho - No-brainer.

Are they bringing out a 1200GS Adventure version? I'm about to buy the 1150 and am now wondering if it's worth waiting for the 1200.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Well, I just let a great deal on a 2004 Adventure get away because I think the R1200GS is the way to go. When we do our next trip (a little more adventurous than our last trip around Europe and North Africa) in about 3 years I'm sure that Touratech will have a whole host of goodies for it (a 20L tank?!?).

Grant, you are absolutely correct about power though. I didn't expect it but I found that when we were travelling it just wasn't about going fast. The mindset just completely changed. The old R100GS worked just fine and I don't think I'll be able to part with it when I get the R1200GS. '89 R100GS

Took the 1150 Adv and the new 1200 GS for rides back to back! what a difference. The new 1200 feels much more like my G/S just with suspension, brakes, power, comfort etc.Fueling and gearbox operation was much better on the newer one as well. Doesnt quite have the endearing looks of the Adv though. Feels more like a Ducati Multistrada.
