starter noise

on the 1200 GS I bought a new starter has been fitted 100 miles ago. There is a noise in it when you turn it over like a loud scratching sound.
the people I bought it from said that it is becasue it is new and that the gear has not meshed into the ring gear on the bike.
Dont want to chance it from cape town to cairo without making sure it wont let me down..
anyone ever hear of this prob before

noisy thing

Hi. This sounds a bit strange.. It should not make any scratchingnoise. But then again, strange things can happen. Take the starter of the bike and test it for any noises. Make an easy wiring from your battery, or any other battery, and run the starter. It might be the bearing inside it that makes the noise.
By the way, it do starts the engine right??
Good luck

HI, No probs

My route will be
South Africa via Botswana to Victoria Falls
Then either north or south of lake Kariba through either Zambia or Zimbabwe to mozambique

then into malawai and north along lake Malawi into Tanzania
then either to Dar es Salam and on to Kilamanjairo or to lake victoria and into Nairobi.
From there either to Uganda , but more likely straight to Addis Ababba
From there to Karthoum
from there to Wadi Haifa and then on to the ferry to Aswan and then to Cairo
from Cairo accross the Sainai to Israel.
On to Tel Aviv
then home to Ireland

total 35 days )))))))))))))))))))

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
