Need Advise: HOT (overheating) F650

Hi,

Am in Erdek, Turkey and am having a problem with my bike overheating. Went for a ride yesterday and the bike began overheating every few kilometers. Coolant level in resevoir looks normal. Radiator fan appears to be inoperative but I lost the fan before and had no problem with overheating as long as I was not in stop-and-go city traffic or climbing a big hill on a hot day. Therefore, the fan may have been inoperatıve for some time without me noticing... I think the problem is the water pump but would like to be sure before trying to get one shipped from İstanbul (or Germany??). My question: How do İ determıne if the pump has failed? Maybe disconnect the hose from the water pump to the back of the cylinder cooling jacket, start the bike and see if coolant gets pumped out? Not sure this will work as İ do not know the direction of circulation. Another questıon: Anthing tricky about replacing the water pump? Appears to be held on by 4 Torx-head fasteners. Just remove the fasteners and replace the old pump wıth a new one? Last question: Is there a thermostat in the system? İf so, the problem could be a stuck thermostat whıch İ assume could just be removed??? As a foreigner am unable to register a SIM card for my phone, few people speakıng Englısh here, few bıkers, and have been unable to access my e-maıl account from this ınternet cafe. Would VERY MUCH appreciate any input. Thanks!!!

Hey Erdek
The fan not working sounds more likely to cause this han the waterpump. That water pump actually isn't known to fail. What fails is the seals, but the pump normally keeps pumping (unless the gear at the back breaks). Id test the fan first. Go to f650.com for more info. Everything you need is there.. if a bike overheats and the fan doesn't work, then i'd start with that.. it has to work when the e gine gets hot...
ps there is a thermostat. If you look at the radiator (so looking towards the back of the bike, it is at the bottom right where the hose is connected if im correct). But again: f650.com go to faq and you'll find the info..
Cheers
A.

I had both failures.

If the oil is chocolate brown or the coolant level has gone up it's the pump seals. You need a pump rebuild kit, coolant, oil, sump washer etc. and a free afternoon. If this fails the and the new oil goes brown the head is warped and you are in big trouble. Do not ride on a duff pump. If memory serves you also need circlip pliers.

The fan switch is a GAVITY return POS mounted on it's side near the RHS cylinder head/back of the radiator by some cretin in Berlin who I'd cheerfully demonstrate GRAVITY to using a ten story building, an anvil and his head. Pull the plug off and jump the pins. Fan should run. If not, check for power coming down one pin and spin the fan blades by hand and check the fuse. I jumped mine to the nearby horn wires. No horn but when you are in traffic the button runs the fan.

The best long term solution involves a gallon of petrol, matches and a trip to the nearest Yamaha or Suzuki dealer (sorry, I no longer feel any love towards the Rotax Wreck).
