Motor Starter 1150GSA

Hi,

I have a problem with my motor starter...Some thing, like it's fine and a second later isn't working properly...

In the morning I can start the engine normally one time, if the engine turns off in the next seconds, when I push the start button I can hear it freely, but wont go foward and rotate the engine!

I have removed it and cleaned and lubed the overrunnig clutch and the solenoid...

Whats the next step?

This starter motor is the same used in a Renault...Any one knows the model?

Thanks a lot!

Sorry for any bad English!

Hello,

Can you give us a little more information on your bike, eg, year. It will also help others if you can fill out your profile so fellow Hubbers can identify the part(s) and provide more detailed help.

A quick search on BMWBike.com shows the starter as being a servicable part for which there is a 'repair kit'. The BMW part no. for an '04 1150GSA starter is 12412306700 - but note you can get refurbished ones. I think Valeo starter is the one, at least that's what I saw for sale second hand and it fits all 11xx models.

With starters, sometimes they just don't have the cranking power so it might sound like it is spinning but not cranking... anyone had experience with this?? :online2long:

Hi,
It as production date of 04/2003 and it's a 1150GSA!
I use maxbmwmotorcycles.com to check for parts and diagrams!
Thanks!

The problem is if I can fix it with a repair kit or if it needs a new one...!?

You won't be able to tell until you take the start off the bike and pull it apart. What worries me is that it spins and starts the bike cold but not when it's warm. So perhaps the starter has a problem that is intermittent or just when it is warm. This may indicate an imminent failure or it might be because of something else. You should recheck everything including checking the battery and loose or damaged wiring. It is possible that the battery terminal or connects to the starter are loose.

If none of the other checks bring up any problems then I would take the starter off the bike and pull it appart and check for any broken or worn parts. I wouldn't buy a new/refurbished starter until you have checked it or had someone check it for you.

It may be a good idea to get the repair kit if you don't find any obvious problems, as this would be cheaper than a new/refurbished one. Then try it once you've don't the repairs.

Alternatively if you know someone with the same bike and they don't mind, you could swap out their start for yours and see if that helps.

There are a few threads with photos on here about starter issues, here is one where the guy (03XT600E) got the repair kit, fixed it and re-installed it. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...nt-start-54065
