Military R65 g/s
 

Here is another topic that I can't seem to find on the HUBB...

I see that in Germany at the moment there are quite a few R65 gs military bikes from the '80s.

Has anyone had any experience with these? They appear to be quite similar to the r80s, but I can't read German so I don't know what the descriptions of the bikes contain.
They can be found on Mobile.De...

Should one be cautious when looking to buy a military bike? I.e. have they been abused in their life?

I'm guessing you mean the 87-90 year version? Does it have the paralever?

During the period 87-90(life time of the first version of the paralever GS), the first G/S version continues with a smaller engine (650 cm³, 82mm x 61,5mm, 27 hp (20 kW DIN) at 5500 rpm, 43 Nm at 3500 rpm, Compression: 8,4:1, 2 Bing carburators 26mm, 5 speeds), it's the R65GS. It is exactly like the R80G/S except for the chrome exhaust, the GS mirror, the battery (12v/20Ah vs: 12v/16Ah) and the weight : 198 kg.

You may ask from HPN or elswhere airhead aknowledge people if the 1000cc big bore kit is fittable to it. If yes it could make a good machine i guess(?)

You bet your bottom $ that military vehicles get abused. I, too saw a dealer offering these by the truckload. I'm sure a search on relevant Gs web sites will uncover more info. I was told they have 27PS low-compression engines. I this is true, expect the bikes to be heavy as any other GS, gutless and thirsty.

Also remember that the R45/65 engines are substantially different from the bigger ones. Don't expect to slip on 800 cc barrels, for example.

The R65 has shorter stroke then R80 or R100. It is possible to get a 850-kit from Motoren Israel. Check out there website http://www.motoren-israel.de , it's a great company and hey usually answer questions pretty fast.

The German military bikes were 27hp low compression ratio engines, sluggish and thirsty and badly abused most of the time. Not a good buy like most ex army vehicles unless you are a skilled mechanic and know what you want and do.

What advert are you looking at?

If it's from these guys, they don't give any details and don't answer emails. So unless you can go there and check out the bike, Forget it!

Anyway, ex German military means they were driven by conscripts who don't give a toss, regularly serviced, and probably high mileage. Most conscripts assigned to motorbike duty don't have a driving license or only had it very recently as they are 18 to 21 and German law limits power to 27hp for beginners (first two years) since '86.

I don't think I would buy one....but it's your dosh...

Thanks for the posts all. After doing some more research, it appears that the sellers of these bikes don't want to offer too many details.

I think ill be going for an F650 instead :)
