IMHO this means a lot of job (and parts). You have to change all the controls and the grips. You also have to change (or modify) the upper forkhead.
It will be harder to find a new bar in a shop by the road if it brakes. I don’t know how much stronger the 28mm aluminum is but do you need it? The cylinders normally take most of the crash, or?

The standard GS bars are very tough, I wouldn't even consider making the swap unless I HAD TO.

Merlin.

Touratech sell a kit to convert bikes fitted with 22mm bars to phat KTM style bars such as Magura, TAG and Pro Taper. I had a set fitted to my Africa Twin and they really were fantastic. The standard switch gear will still fit as the bars are fat in the middle and then taper out to a standard 22mm at the ends. The longer touratech bar clamps also have the added benefit of raising the height of the bars which made riding whilst standing up a pleasure rather than a back knackering nightmare (although this can also be accomplished much cheaper by just buying bar risers). The kit isn't cheap though - all in with clamps, bars and special brackets to adapt acerbis handguards I think it came to £150 but IMHO it was worth it.

The only negative point is if you do manage to bend the bars in the middle of nowhere it could be tricky getting a replacement set shipped in. Saying that, I'm definitely adding a set to my R80G\S.

HTH

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
