michelin deserts on a 100gs
 

i´m planing a trip to mauritania with my 1988 r100gs and would like to fit michelin desert at front and rear, is there enough clearance at the rear or should i move the wheel to the lefth?

I think you need a spacer - Touratech do one.

I bought one and didn't use it as I used MT21's instead - they don't need spacers.

Hi, I would try the tyre on the bike first before buying a spacer, it may be that you just need to shave the knobbles off the right hand side. I fitted a T66? on my '86 R80 which was a 130 section and not the 120 as specified, it cleared the swing arm ok but on bad bumps the tyre hit the underside of the mudguard but this was on a Monolever, the paralever has more suspension travel and so this should not be a problem. For sand (Northern Sudan) I used TKC80's and found these very good as did a friend on his 93 R100

Note that you need AT LEAST 1/4" / 6mm clearance between tire and swingarm or it will rub when hot and under load.

On paralever bikes (or generally when you have a tubeless rim) definitely run tubeless - much better than tubes. Easier to fix quickly and less susceptible to sudden blowouts.
