known problems with 07 1200 gs

I am trying to decide on my new bike. Both for around town and an upcoming RTW. I am wondering if anyone knows of problems or weaknesses associated with the 06 or later 1200 gs that I should watch for or pay attention to. I will have the bike for a year or so before my RTW so I want to keep a watchful eye on the bike in preparation.

Thanks...

Now there's a question!!

Ross,
I wait with bated breath but you won't get an answer from BMW UK!!

Maybe, just maybe, BMW US can answer this question, but I am not holding my breath for their reply either.

My riding mate has his second 1200GS and it is shaping up for warranty work, just like his first one. Let's both see what the other owners tell you here.

Cheers,

Dave

You might find this interesting. 2006 BMW R1200 Gs Motorcycle Recalls, Defects, & Problems at Motorcyclist Magazine. It doesn't really completely answer my question but it's a good start.

Had my EWS immobilizer antenna broken after a couple of thousand km's. Very annoying when travelling; luckily happened in the neighbourhood. The only permanent fix is to change the antenna completely. Have two other friends with '07 Beemers (I have a R1200GS Adventure, they F800) and we all had broken EWS antennas this spring...

Someone will undoubtedly be along shortly to tell you that you should only attempt RTW with an older, simpler bike. But with the Internet, a helpful dealer back home and Fedex I would happily depart tomorrow.

Given the huge numbers of these on the roads, there will always be horror stories, but the vast majority of owners don't have major problems and would quite readily buy another one. I had 48,000 miles on my 12GS before trading for a 12GSA which now has 16,000 miles.

Your best source of info on this bike is the 1200GS forum on ukgser: 1200 GS - ::. UKGS'er.com .::
