Just got a 1982 R 80 G/S

Hello all this is my first post on this forum and first I'd like to say hello to all.
As per the subject header, my Brother has just become the proud owner of a '82 R 80 G/S which seems to have not been modified at all. What I'd like to know from any of you who have come across this kind of bike is what are your thoughts, recommendations, and any other little ideas about what to do with a bike like this? He won't be doing any long tours on the bike, probally only short trip around the country (Nepal) and otherwise the bike would be used for week end blasting around the city of Kathmandu (a waste of a nice bike I know.) I look forward to your replies.

With Thanks.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations to you and your brother for the purchase of a truly remarkable machine! There are lots of previous threads on this forum detailing ways to maintain and improve this bike. Most of them deal with setting the bike up for long trips, carrying lots of gear. For local riding without a lot of weight, he might be fine leaving the bike the way it is; it will really be more a matter of personal choice and what he wants to achieve in the way of performance (or can afford).

Do a search of this site for ‘BMW GS’ or ‘R80 G/S’ and lots of great info will come up. Also, Grant’s bike (click on ‘our trip’ on left hand menu and follow links) is a newer year of the same model bike, so all modifications and discussion will be applicable.

For general maintenance and technical info (the G/S shares most basic components with its road only brethren) try the Airhead Beemer site, or Mica Peak (in links). Or keep asking questions here...

Happy riding!
