hpn gears

has anybody the HPN long fifth gear installed?, does it fits well with the stock intermediate shaft fifth gear or you need to change it too due to the teeth number change?
i´m planing too the change for the first gear to the short ratio tipe, but i think that the fitting for it would be worse yet by its smaller size, same questions for it.
thanks in avance

Rafael,

No problem - I have both fitted on mine, and they fit and mesh beautifully. The tooth profile/shape is custom designed to mesh correctly. It's amazing how different the number of teeth can be and still work if done correctly.

The change is an improvement, but remember it is only 5% higher - and lower appropriately. It is NOT a huge difference, but worth doing if you have the gearbox apart anyway. Make sure that the low first is installed by an expert - it must be pressed onto the shaft, and should be done with Loctite to ensure it doesn't come loose. I cleaned the shaft with special Loctite cleaner/primer 7471, froze the shaft, warmed the gear to 80 degrees C, wiped the shaft dry and coated it with Loctite 609 and then pressed it on.

Mine now has about 10,000km and it's fine.

Hello.
Currently my bike is in peices and i'm getting my transmition re-built. Does anyone know of a North American retailer of the R100GS lower first gear, or is HPN the only option?!?
Thanx is advance http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Touratech (see link above) sells the gears and is set up as a North American distributer. I believe that Cascade BMW in Washington State deals for them (Touratech) as well.

Mr. Ron 18 Jun 2004 09:59

Thanx Timo, i'll check it out!

A&S Motorcycles catalog lists the higher fifth gear for $269.95 U.S. Don't know about quality (hpn or copy?), or if first is available also.
Cheers...

Hello
Okay, here we go. Tried Tourtech, nothing on their websight. Phoned Cycoactive, a tourtech dealer, and left a detailed message, never received a return call. Called A@S Cycle this morning, they can order the gears from a company called Wudo in germany for the outrageous price of $269USD each! Unfortunately, A@S refuses to ship to Canada!?! When i asked why, i was told it was company policy, so i politely told them what they could do with their gears and all the other products i was considering buying from them in the future...NOT!! Sent an E-mail to HPN this morning and waiting for a return letter. Could someone please wish me luck!

Ron, Good luck with HPN--I've written them a number of times, even in German, and have not received a response. Touratech USA might still be the best bet. Or let me know if you need a US shipping addy.

Kevin

Hey Ron, Have you checked with Shails in Van. or Anderwerks in Calgary. They might be able to supply the gears. Or even John Valk or Pacific Yamaha in Van. Stranger things have happened...bad news about A&S was hoping to order some parts...

Mr. Ron 21 Jun 2004 09:16

Hello.

Mr. Ron 21 Jun 2004 09:19

Hello.
Thanx for the tips guys. I live down the street from Shail and talk to him all the time. He tells his customers they need to source out the gears themselves, he doesn't have a supplier. I'll try the dealerships on tuesday...say, i wonder where Grant got his(hint hint) http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

What a hassle...

Mr. Ron, I had a look at the HPN homepage. They offer 1st gear for 117,60 and the 5th gear for 127,80 Euros. The latter for R80GS or R100GS after 4/1982.

Touratech doesn't seem to offer these gearings anymore.

If you're not successful in Canada or USA, just send me an EMail and I could try and get things sorted out with HPN directly.

I reckon, the 1st gear is quite useful, but the 5th doesn't make a great difference in fuel consumption.

Hello:}
Good news! Anderwerks in Calgary, Alberta deals with both HPN and Tourtech. He had the 1's gear sitting on the shelf and i placed my order today, tbd Greyhound...I'm sooooo happy:} Talk to Dave Anderson, ph#403-277-4269 {this spells 4bmw} The price is CAN$189.00. He also carries the taller fifth, but he says it is much more expensive. The websight is www.anderwerks.com

Vaufi 25 Jun 2004 21:10

Congrats, Ron!
Anderwerks is a nicely set up page. Hope to remember them, if I should pass through Calgary one day.

If you need anything from HPN, just let me know. They've got lots of nice stuff - but everything's got it's price :-(

Happy riding!
Hans
