How to connect Gps cable to electric system directly?
 

I bought a Garmin Gps and would like to connect its power cable to bike's electric system.

My bike is R 80 GS BAsic, similar to R 100 GS.

What is the easiest/best way to connect the cable?
(I don't think to take power from power outlet).

USB at 5.5V?
 

Providing your USB cable definitely charges the GPS device, not all do, you'll need a transformer to lower the 12V input voltage to 5.5V for USB.

I used a 12V car plug-in that has a dial to set the output from 12 down to 9,7,5.5,3V etc. (Maplins in the UK) Best bet would be to buy the 12V cigarette socket plug from garmin directly - it will have the correct 12 to 5.5V transformer in it. I'd then fit a 12V socket to the bike. Even little bikes can usually bear a GPS.

The automotive ones that take a round 4 pin plug into the back can take a direct 12V feed on the red (+ve) and brown (earth) wires. Just connect suitable (IP68) plugs to a switched feed and the car wire for the unit and it's done.

GPS V and GPS60C/CS work this way.

I have 'hard' wired my Garmin 2610 direct to the battery on both my R80gs basic and Enfield Diesel, the wires required for battery connection were already'stripped back, the wires are very fragile and (just like UK telephone wires), amongst all the wires from the gps I was suprised that only 2 were needed. USE A FUSE in the circuit!

Garmins do leads ready made for this purpose. I have them fitted to my BM and my Husabergs.

Just in case the thought doesn't occur to you, Samy, if the ready-made stripped back cables are not available, just buy the much more common car cigarette lighter socket cable and cut the end off. Then do as 3Wheel, Dave & Spike mentioned.

I've wired up several BMWs & Hondas in this way and they all worked. :thumbup1:
