GS Fuel Injection issue

Miquel is having a prob with fuel injection, I will summarise for everyone in case someone has a better idea.

"When I was riding about 100-120 kms, suddenly, the
bike had a small failure on the gas injection, just half second, as
there was no petrol going the cilinders, and again it worked again.
The same happend few times, about 10 times, one every 20 or 30 km"

From my understanding and experience this is unlikely to be the fuel pump controller. When my FPC died there was no signs it just went and the effect was like running out of petrol. Although I don't rule it out entirely I suggested to Miquel to check the quality of the fuel and perhaps try an injector cleaner.

I also think that maybe he should check the air filter as pour air flow might also be a problem.

:helpsmilie: Has anyone got another idea?

FYI Miquel is riding a BMW R1200GS 06 or 07 model I think, so the fuel filter is not servicable.

My 1150 has been doing similar things but I've a feeling it might be battery related. Mine would stutter as if running out of fuel after 1/2 mile or so but seemed ok on a long run. Turned out the old battery had a problem and seemed to be ok once I had it replaced. However recently its been acting up again and reckon its the cold weather/lack of use so have recharged it and once this snow fecks off, will try it again.

Thanks Mike I'll pass on the info.

Probably an issue with bad fuel but you never know.

So lesson is to be wary of the Egyptian petrol quality.

I'll take your $5 and raise you $20!

Different bike different pump. You can't take an example of f650 to r1200 and extrapolate one person's experience because of similar problems to another, but since you did, I'll be happy to take your money:clap:

Anyone else want to weigh in on this one, it might get interesting very quickly.:Beach:

turbo - i have a suspicion its the same pump. also i know its the same throttle position sensor, o2 sensor, fuel pump controller, etc.

yeah ok i'll take you on the $20

Done! But to be fair we just need to iron out the details...

How soon is soon? ie next 1,000kms or next 10,000kms or more?

When you say 'fuel pump' do you mean the FPC (fuel pump controller)? or the actual pump itself?

dajg 10 Dec 2010 14:27

the guy is on a rtw right? so next 10,000km?

the fuel pump - the electric, submersible pump. not the filter, not the controller, not the fuel rail, not the injection system, not the other electronic sh*t.

mine started to cause issues around the 30k mark & died at 51k, but only got real bad at 50k.

oh, and its US dollars right? i'll take cash.

find out from your man how many k's on the clock to-date...

motoreiter 10 Dec 2010 15:05

I have not heard of many fuel pump problems on R1200GS, although FPC problems are of course not uncommon. As Turbo points out, this does not sound like the normal FPC problem though...

Just adding 2 cents here, but does it have to be only a lack of feul to make it stutter like that?
It might also be ignition pickup module related. If the signal unit is going bad it can cut out the ignition intemittently especially when warm , then it dies totally.

From the horse of course

So I went to the source and this was his reply:

My bike was around 55.000 km by then and I rode about 500 km having fuel injection issues, but the libyan fuel was the solution!

Dajg, looks like you're going to be putting that $20 to charity...:D

I had an identical issue with my old R1100gs and disconnecting he O2 sensor cleared it all up.
