Gearbox issue? R1150GS 2001 non Adv

In the last couple of days, shifting down has become more difficult and I´ve started having to pull off from the lights in 2nd. Shifting up seems to be ok at the moment but it just doesn´t seem to want to shift downwards very easily which isn´t ideal although it does eventually.

The bike has 76,000miles on it and I´ve had no problems in the past. I also changed the gear oil about 4k miles ago, not with SAE 90 as I normally do but with a heavy 80w or 90w (can´t remember) oil. Is this perhaps the problem?

I also just read on UKGSer it could be a problem with the pedal linkage so will take a look at that.

Any thoughts much appreciated though.

Sticky Downshifts

Your symptoms are very similar to worn or dry splines on your transmission input shaft where the clutch plate rides. To remedy this requires removal of the transmission to lube the splines. Hopefully theinput shaft is not trashed.

Good Luck, Dennis

Thanks Dennis

I took off the pedal linkage, cleaned it up and greased it and it now seems to be ok but will keep an eye on it.

Cheers

Don't think it's needed, very probably it was the stiff pedal with dirt penetrated the moving parts. Known "issue" on 11xxGSes, even the tank-bike needs a nice cleaning/greasing every 100,000kms or so :)

Good roads!
