G650GS, guess the parts game.

BMW G650GS

I picked up one of these last year to take over from my BMWR 100GSPD that has been retired from big trips, and enable me to give it a good tinkering to get it top notch again.

As it came as a rather basic model, this being the road orientated version ( cast wheels ) I have spent a while putting it onto a specification that I need for daily use/work and touring. Nothing special....bash plate, chain oiler, crash bars, barkbusters etc.

During this process I discovered that third party support for this bike is sketchy at best when it came to buying replacement parts or non-existant.

The main problem being, that no bugger seems to know exactly what part of this bike is new or from an early F650, the later F650 or the F650gsPD.Something as simple as a new chain and sprocket set from DID, does not come up for a G650GS, so you have to guess which of the older bikes will fit it!

BMW dealers are of no help as they can order authorised parts for it, but have no knowledge beyond that.

I cornered the main BMW bods at the Bike show in the NEC,I suggested that maybe an informal page on their parts site could be made to give you an idea of what part is new/old and their response was to say " basically just buy BMW parts ".....obvious I suppose, but considering how costly all their parts are, it defeats the purpose of having a cheap to run bike.

( side note..that response has pretty much decided for me to move onto Husky as my next bike )

So I think I will start a help list on this thread to enable people to have an idea what fits what.

Belly Pan/Bash Plate

The original belly pan, that fits the F650 and the PD will also fit the G650GS.

The only modification is that the bottom right of the plate will press against the electrical box gadget thing mounted on the right side of the lower engine.

Fit a few extra washers to where it fits against the main frame ( front ) with one bolt and this gives you enough clearence.

Rear Panniers, soft luggage

The mounting points for these appear to be exactly the same in dimensions as the older bikes...I have fitted a soft luggage system from the old 650 and it fits fine. So I assume that the rear frame and all the gubbins are as the old one.
