Front "Sports Suspension" for aircooled GS

Having put an Ohlins rear shock on my R80GS Basic I decided to uprate the front suspension. Replacement forks e.g. WP upside down were discounted on cost so I considered uprating to progressive springs, e.g. WP or ProgressiveSuspension.

However, when looking through the BMW parts lists at my friendly BMW dealer I found a "Sports Suspension" listed specifically for the R80GS Basic. Not just any old sports suspension but cartridge type with compression AND rebound adjustment. Not something I'd normally expect from BMW. This comes at a price though (£350ish + VAT).

Has anyone else heard of these, are they worth it. Looks to me like a good compromise between just uprating the springs and a full Fork replacement.

Strangely, this "sports suspension" wasn't listed for any other aircooled GS model e.g R100GS even though (I assume) they have the same forks as the GS Basic.

This is news to me too - let us know what you find out!

The usual upgrade for R100GS forks is just Progressive springs.

Hi

After struggling for a while with a full 43L tank of fuel on my paralever GS, the legendary Ron Williams of Maxton Engineering (www.maxton.demon.co.uk) built me new fork internals, with some real damping, and had new springs wound to suit.
They now work really well and give a very well damped, plush ride, even with a full fuel load. Only reservations are the longer springs rattle a bit if the front end goes light over bumps, which isn't a problem, and I occasionally get some patter hitting bumps under heavy braking, which should be cured with a bit more fork oil, I haven't bothered yet.

With a WP rear shocker, the bike handles like a dream compared to my friend's otherwise identical GS.
