F800GS stalling/cutting out...help

hi,

I realise this question has been asked before, but am searching for an answer asap as am currently in Buenos Aires meant to be heading south tomorrow.

My bike the BMW F800GS has decided to stall/cut out as if its out of fuel (which it isn't).

it only seems to have happen since arriving in south america and the heat, it tends to happen at lower speeds and is ok(ish) at high revs, but around town always cutting out.

Usually if i leave it for 5-10 seconds and start it with some throttle, but soon after cuts out.

Any suggestions and solutions would be appreciated.

cheers

joe

if any

googling 'f800gs stalling' brings up a pile of threads on AdvRider and elsewhere.

Could be fuel pump or even side stand switch.

joej90 11 Jan 2011 23:42

thanks tim, will try the side stand first, moving onto the fuel pump if the first doesn't work

Clogged fuel injectors are the other common cause and some have had success by added techron or seafoam fuel additives to their bikes.

Vapor-lock?

Hey mate!
Good to see you're there! Unlucky you're havin troubles! If you installed fuel filters...are they getting hot and vapor-locking? Solve by adding insulation around them to shield from engine etc.

Otherwise see if when you put it on prime if it runs...if so perhaps your vacuum line is blocked/not working.
Good luck!

Jtw000 12 Jan 2011 19:44

Prime? I had two of these, troublesome little buggers, nice to ride though. Sounds like the symptoms of a failing fuel pump but I thought the F800gs was pretty sound in that department. At the risk of sounding like I'm stating the obvious, I'd check all the fuel lines, etc for any damage and check sensors for corrosion or blockages. I'd check the plugs too and the connectors, wires, etc. I'd also think about air filter in case that was blocked. It might not just be fuel starvation, it could be anything to do with combustion.
It just occurred. I've not had one of these for a while and can't remember but on my G650 there is a way to reset the computer by working the throttle before turning the key. Maybe there is a way to reset the computer on the 800? Definitely worth a try. Maybe someone knows how to do this or even if it can be done.

Good luck.

Have a read of this thread re an F650GS twin--it ended up being a fuel pump problem.
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...650-twin-50146

Same problem, different thread on AdvRider but might be useful for other pointers
total power failure f650 twin - stuck in khartoum - ADVrider

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, have ended up replacing the fuel pump, driven 1500km intp patagonia, so far no problems!!

Hi joe!

I have an 09 gs 800, me and some friend were out in baja, last year, and i encountered the same issue, lucky my buddies were there to help sort out! On start up,it would run for 10 sec. or so, then die! Yes, like fuel pump issue,it was so to speak, we check to see the pump was pumping fuel by removing fuel hose and fire it up for the few sec, it would run, and sure enuff it was pumping fuel, On the gs800, the fuel pump is in two stages, 1 is the primary stage to pump,,,2 is secondary stage to keep pumping, what we found out is if you take a wire, strip at both ends , and stick one end to your 12volt power source ie@your batt, tender lead, and the other to the belive it was the blue/yellow plug in lead going to pump( its been awhile) i think its correct tho,,, the bike should fire and keep running! If that fails ,i dont know what! thats the issue i had which sounds like yours,,, We two posted on here via a laptop, as we were stuck in baja , trying to revive my bike, and we got the stangest replys, like side stand sensor, call bmw( not an option there)Someone said it might be the chip in the key, try another,,, nope not it either,The bike does have a cut off from the pump,if on its side for a period,,, it was on its side,,but the day before, so the issue of the pump, was just an momentary issue,, i found out after i got home,a guy in great britan had made a jumper lead for that issue! BMW had a tech, issue on that problem i found out,,,but its not a recall! Go figure! Anyways hope this was some insight? Ride Safe:welcome:

F800GS Cutting Off

I also have an 09 F800gs with only have 7500 miles. Same problem as most of you. First time it happened I was running with traffic at about 70mph on I-10 over the Louisiana swaps and suddenly it cuts off. I tried to restart it on the fly but no luck. I was able to coast to a safe pull off. Without resetting the ignition switch I tried to start the motor, no luck. I then reset the ignition switch (key off then back to run position) and it fired rite up, but the display now read “SERVICE”. No problems for after that, I made it home no problem.
The following day in the morning I started the bike. It ran fine for about 10 seconds then it cut off. Tried to restart, engine would crank but would not fire. It required resetting the ignition switch for the bike to restart. It did this multiple times until it wormed up. (Very pissed at this point) I took into my local BMW service center for diagnosis and the 6K service. The service manager stated that the fuel pump was drawing too much current which he believed indicated the fuel pump was gummed up and needed to be replaced. $820 parts and labor to replace a dirty fuel pump…Yeah, WTF.
So I’m going to do as Cambio Bomba nafta / gasolina BMW F800GS / F650GS- Fuel Pump Change BMW F800GS / F650GS - YouTube . I ordered the pump from Amazon.UK for $150 U.S. delivered. It should be here tomorrow or Friday. My concern is the “Fuel pump, electronic” (BMW part #16148523262) it’s a small piece that sits on top of the fuel pump assembly. It looks like the power wires to the fuel pump pass through the “Fuel pump, electronic”. I don’t know what function the “Fuel pump, electronic” has.
Does anyone know the “Fuel pump, electronic” purpose?
I’ll post the results once I have the new pump installed. Cheers.

50% of BMW "cutting out / stalling " failures are generally fuel pumps. In my experience.

Sometimes the fuel pump controller on the older 1200's... They've mostly been changed to the newer, better one now though.

You can buy pump repair kits on ebay. I've changed countless fuel pumps recently for a 'quality enhancement campaign'. It seems pretty easy to change the motor if you're not a ham fisted bodger.

F800GS Cutting Off

Ok, The pump I ordered from the UK arrived DOA. I sent it back and hopefully I get my money refunded but I'm not holding my breath.

I removed my stock pump from the BMW pump assembly and realized it is a common design used in many modern fuel injected vehicles. My only concerns were the flow rate and operating pressure. Per BMW, the specs on the stock BMW pump is rated at 100LPH (26.5 GPH) and 3 bar (43.5 PSI). So instead of going to my local BMW stealership and forking out $550 for the BMW pump assembly with only a 90 day warranty, I sourced a Delphi pump #CFE0479 for $94 with a lifetime warranty from my local Autozone parts store. The Delphi CFE0479 is rated at 26.4GPH/43.5 PSI. Perfect match. I installed it last week and I went on a 600 mile tour this weekend. Not a single problem, starts and runs perfectly. I would have liked to change the fuel filter too but I was not able to fined a filter that would fit in the stock location. So I back flushed the old filter using a generic fuel pump. I wanted to see if the filter was the problem so I decided to strain the back flushed fuel through a micro cloth. I ran fuel through the filter until the flow was clear. I collected just about a shot glass of what looked and felt like decomposed plastic. I'm not sure if the US blended Fuel is due solving something in the fuel tank but I'll be checking my filter once a year. Unless you are able to source a replacement filter, Back flushing the filter is a must.

I hope this helps someone.

Keep the rubber side down.....:scooter:

Toyota Corolla fuel pump for F800GS ?

I have recently taken receipt of my F800GS after we travelled home separately from a troublsome trip to Morocco. It was the same old story about the fuel pump Cutting out every 5s for 10s then kicking in again at the end of long hard days, basicaly all of the same symptomes you frequently see on this forum.

The day i got it back i did the Bakermans Hog Roast event on it and in the cool English climate had no issues at all, however i am currently looking at swapping bikes with someone and want to ensure that its in good order so want to change the fuel pump first.

I was told that it needs a Toyota Corolla pump from a certain period like 90-94.
can anyone shed any light on this for me please.

Extra brownie points if you can tell me a good place to get one (new) at a good price.
Gold star and a reach around for anyone who can give me the part number.

P.S.Don't be put off of helping by the reach around its up to you weather you cash it in or not !
