Hi,

I am stuck about 300km from Iran with a destroyed transmission in 88 r100 gs. I am on the prowl for replacement tranny hopefully in Tehran. The gearbox from what other models fit an 88 r100 gs?

I have located a 1998 tranny but is this six speed off a 1100 gs and does some of the bikes frame connect to this model?

Advice would be appreciated as would be translations in Farsi.

The 1100 model won't fit. You'll need an airhead gearbox from 1981 through 1995.

... or 1996. Remeber that the oilseal (rear) is mounted different ways in g/s and GS and the small notch above the oilsead should be filled with silicon on a GS.

Older gearboxes can be made to fit but you have to modify (cut) the input shaft.

...This is an excellent point, one that is often overlooked. Without filling this gap with silicon, oil will weep from your transmition into the paralever housing, eventually weeping by the pinion seal and overfilling the beveldrive. This happened to me after i had the pall spring replaced in my tranny on a roadtrip, the horror i felt when oil began spraying all over my back wheel, and the confusion in trying to figure out how it got there and why my tranny was half empty. Anways, a safe bet is any airhead five-speed transmition from "88 to '95 (i think it's '95? As long as it's a 2-valve airhead and not the 4-valve oilhead) will bolt right on. If the tranny comes from anything but a GS model, put a dab of silicone over the breather hole at the top of the rear output seal. Make sure it's clean and dry, and push it in with your finger to make a good seal. Don't forget to use ONLY new bolts for attaching the driveshaft, they are a special stretch type that cannot be re-used, well, unless your in a dire situation. Use loctite blue. Can't help you much with the farsi, but a google search for "farsi translation" gave me a few hits which may help you. Let us know how it goes.

R80GS Basic (Europe) and R80GS Kalahari (South Africa) was produced in 1996 as the last airheads. I know because I have both :-)
