F650GS Twin - BMW Tank Bag Issues

Just came from a 60 mile ride through gravel and mud here in Costa Rica on my new F650 (400 miles) and noticed how UNCOMFORTABLE the original BMW tank bag is on this bike in rough terrain specially.
Had to move it to the back and fit it with the net, because it was impossible to manouver with this bulky bag between your arms and hitting on my chest on every pot whole. After this experience this tank bag is always going on the back on short trips and on long trips I think it will be staying home and will be replaced with the big soft case.

The cockpit is indeed really small and if you plan on getting out of the saddle at all, it can only take a really small bag.

...but the size of the tank bag in not adecuate for this bike. I guess they didn´t test the design of the tank bag when you ride the motorcycle on off road conditions. In my "designer" opinion they missed by a mile on this accesory.

I've got a 650 twin and to be fair to BMW it is sold as a 90% on road bike. They are pitching the 800GS more towards offroad. Most people here will be using them for touring and a decent size tankbag is important for that!

You should try to see where this new F650 can go, you will be amazed. I hace traveled through almost any condition now and I am impressed. Mud, rivers, rocks, gravel, sand, you name it. You need only some better tires and you are set to almost everything without going extreme. Under this conditions the TB is uncomfortable...

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
