f650gs No lights, no turn signals...

The following went dark today:
-turn signals
-horn
-light signal
-brake light
-high beam
-low beam
-park light
-side stand switch

this still works:
-starter (bike starts and runs)
-instrument lights
-instrument gauges

All the fuses are ok... if life ever wast that easy, right?

Electricity is like witch craft and sorcery for me, so help is really needed.

At first I thought it was the heated handlebars that was the culprit. Some of the rubber on the left side handlebar has been unraveled a tiny bit for some time, exposing the wire in the heater element. I have been using the heater the last few days, and I thought maybe there could have been a short curcuit here. But, then the fuse would have gone, right? And as it hasn't, and there are no lights still, even with the heated handlebars switched off, this can't be the cause, right?

Like I said, I'm no good with magic and the super natural in general.

I ride a 2001 f650gs Dakar, no ABS and with heated handlebars. European type with no light switch on the right handlebar (hard wired daylight riding lights in the on position)

BMWobble-U F650GS Dakar witchcraft doh
made simple:thumbup1: Joachim

used on my 2002 SS Dak and has helped many many other beemer owners.
Never leave home without it!!!

p.s if you need some wiring diagrams, pls email me

Try to pop out the the relief relay - clean and or replace- good chance that's the culprit

so many choices hence the '911'- takes all the frustration out of it (aside from one-aka paying for it!- still, it does pay for itself over time)

With the help of the folks hanging out at f650.com and a wiring diagram, the culprit has been identified, and the replacement part will be ordered tomorrow.

The culprit was the "relief relay", one of very few parts in the wiring loom and electrical components that all of the malfunctions had in common. Simply swapping two adjacent and identical relays served as the test (the other I think is for the fuel injector).

As for that gadget, I just might order one.

I did post that suggestion 4 days ago Wheelie! ah well hey ho!

Ooops, thanks - forgot to give well deserved credit.

Is this a part that should go into my kit of spares for the road you think? Or other relays?

Toyark 15 Oct 2012 13:53

a wee 'ta' is always appreciated:thumbup1:

I have a few relays in my kit but only one failed on me...at my local supermarket!
IMHO the 911 is a worthwhile investment - it tells you if it's roadside fixable or not.
Spare BMS-C, rectifier and a few oither small niknaks-
The bits that are bespoke are the ones to have.

I know this is an old conversation, but I am having the same issues. My 2002 F650GS with 30k miles has No headlight, tail light, or turn signals. Checked fuses and they are good. Swapped Relief relay and BMS relay to further diagnose but nogo there as well. What next? I really don't want to take her to the Dealer!

Check the tail light earth, it bounces around like crazy when on the move, and it also corrodes quickly.
