F650GS 2003 FI unit not working

Just figured out that my FI computer unit has not been working for the last few days. The little whine/whirring noise you normally get switching on the ignition is gone, and my fuel consumption has increased. Not sure yet if it is the unit itself or the power supply to it. It isn't the fuse though. Long story short - due to my own stupidity I shorted two of the pins in the diagnostic plug that sits on top of the rad fan.

Not sure yet what to do about it. My main question is - as it seems to run ok, am I risking damage by keeping using it? Or is it really only going to be the fuel consumption that will suffer until it gets fixed?

All suggestions welcome.

The whirring noise you refer to is probably your fuel pump priming the fuel system. It stops whirring when normal fuel is reached. When you start the engine, the fuel pump switches on again to maintain fuel pressure.

No whirring at all = no fuel pressure = engine does not run = something else may be at fault?

Take the bike to a BMW dealer for a diagnostic test.
