F650/PD Stalling problem
 

I need some help in solving this problem of my bike stalling at the most inappropriate times.
I have already looked at the Chain gang site and it seems alot of overseas BMW F650 riders have had and still are having this problem.
I have contacted three BMW bike shops here in Sydney Australia and non of them have had any experience with this issue. As well, non of them will take any notice of any information off the net which applies to the American or European market as the different emission requirements in variuos countries deem the bikes are of a "different construction" (strange that the problem seems to have no boundries.)
Are there any Australian riders out there that have come across this stalling issue and have successfully erradicated it. I am leaving in February 2004 to ride across from India to Italy and simply cannot come to terms with riding a bike that shuts down when it wants to.
It's a 2000 model 23,000kms. It only does this as you start to slow down for whatever reason, start to brake and pull the clutch in to go down the gears, then it just cuts out like you've hit the kill switch. I now have it down to a fine art where I just hold the clutch in and hit the start button and she fires up straight away and keeps going. However there are times when surrounding traffic and conditions make this little exercise extremley stressful and dangerous. I find it hard to believe that I have the one and only 650PD in Australia that does this, but according to BMW Australia and the three BMW bike shops in Sydney I do.
Any successfull advice from riders would be gratefully appreciated.

Have you checked the obvious i.e. faulty or loose sidestand or clutch interlock switches (if fitted)?

I've ridden various bikes where sidestand switches caused the bike to cut out at the most inappropriate times (to quote).

This may not be relevent - but I used to have a car (mazda mx5) that behaved in exactly the same way - especially during longer journeys. I tried to get it fixed several times but no one could help me. However it did seem to disappear after I changed the battery - to solve another problem - but I wonder if that was an early warning sign?

I'm one of the lucky ones with my F650 - not experienced this problem - yet.

Hi there
I find it very strange that BMW Australia do not know about this well recognised problem. There have been several service updates by BMW for the injection mapping so get the dealer to plug the diagnostic in and confirm what version you have. Not sure what the latest is but at least 10. something.

Some of the guys on the chain gang site have also changed the injector but to software updates should really cure all surging and stalling problems.

Hi Dave,
The bike has been updated. I don' know what the version number is ,but that is what happened when the bike went in for it's 20,000km service. One of the bike shops has agreed to change the control unit and I will test that change for a while. I know quite a few riders have changed their injectors with mixed results. I am not a bike mechanic but I just feel this has to be an electrical fault not mechanical. The control unit is not showing any faults in the diagnostic result but it is an intermittent problem. Anyway at least they have accepted that the problem is real and even if it will cost me to have the problem fixed at least it will be identified. I hope.
