F650 Dakar - Right side exhaust removal

Thinking of disconnecting the right exhaust of my Dakar so that I can convert it into to additional (secret!) storage space.

Has anyone done this?
Is this a good idea?
What are the pitfalls and tips?
Will it effect bike performance / road legality?

Thanks!

Rob.

Don't know the effect will be. I have considered it myself for my dakar. You can however buy a single exhaust system from Wunderlich UK Since it is a Laser there will probably be cheaper places to buy it.

I've done that.

Most difficult thing is to open the LHS because they clamped the pipe rather than welding it in. So you can't get the drill (big drill bit) centre and may have a lot of trouble to open it up sufficiently. May have to cut the LHS end off as well which is a major PITA to do it properly. Much easier if you have access to a large diameter angle grinder. Or just take it to a metal working shop and they'll cut it nice and straight. I did it the hard way.

Not sure if they are still in business.

Ok so it can be done!

Went in to my local BMW dealership who were less than helpful and made me a bit nervous about just hacking at it myself.

Does anyone know a good mechanic in (South) London who specialises in the F650s and might be able to help?

tmotten - thanks for the info. I checked out your photos and that's exactly what I'm after.

Couple of Q's.
- Why is it necessary to open up the LHS as well?
- What is the issues with just cutting and welding close the connecting pipe and leaving the LHS as is?

I "lost" my RHS.
So, What I need to do is weld a plate on the conection to the RHS, and open up a little the hole on the LHS, is that right?

Cheers
