F650 backfiring/lack of power:HELP!!!

Hi guys!

I need some help here. Am stranded in Santa Cruz, Bolivia with my 1995 BMW F650.

It occured more or less suddenly that my bike lost power going uphill. Now it sometimes does not even go beyond idling or up to about 3,000 revs. Sometimes, however, it opens up for a second just to go down again, backfiring, the engine sounds like coughing and sometimes even goes out.

What we have done so far:
1- cleaned carburator and fuel filter
2- replaced spark plugs, checked cables and plugs as well as the two plastic boxes with the copper cables inside from which the cables run into the spark plugs (sorry, I do not know the English name for it).
3- cleaned air filter
4- although there is a spark from the plugs, on Monday the elctrician will have a look at the bike

However, I am quite frustrated as although the local non-BMW mechanics are very nice they also seem to be at their wits' end´. ANY IDEAS?!

Cheers, d

Thanks for all the help guys.
We seem to have found the problem: the magnetic impulse switch in the generator had failed.
Cheers, d
