Electrical fault on 650 Dakar.

Hi all,

Could do with a bit of help with this one...

Got a 650 Dakar (single spark 03 model), when i press the horn it blows the fuse. Had some of it in bits and i don't think it's the horn or the button. The fault seems to be between the button and the horn but it's near impossible to track the fault without a wiring diagram.

Does anyone have, can send me or tell me where i can get a wiring diagram for this bike.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? someone told me to test the actual horn because it might be broken and actually drawing too much current.

Cheers

Hi Mat.

GS / Dakar Documentation FAQ

All the docs are here, do you have a volt metre?

Is it the standard horn?

Have you added anything to the bike?

Has it just happened out of the blue?

Does EVERYTHING else on the bike work?

Check the current draw top see where its spiking, also check your switch gear to see if theres any thing wrong in the actal button.

I WILL check back in about 2 hours as in an internet cafe, cheers

In ordre to stop blowng fuses all over teh place .. take one blown fuse and wire a headlamp globe across it .. this way when the fault occures the globe will 'light up' and prevent teh wires burning up.

Does the fault always occure when teh button is pressed ? You may not know .. it could just be evedent when teh trip stops.. with teh globe fitted you'll find out ...

From the horn button a wire will run to a connector .. around the steering head .. then from there it runs in teh main wiring loom .. eitehr directly to teh horn .. or to a relay ..

The fault may only occure when the button is pressed and you go over a bump .. I'd suggest dissconnecting the horn itself .. and riding with the button pressed continuously .. if the fault does not occure then it maybe the horn itself has an intermittant short..

Good luck

As it only happens when the horn button is pressed ,check for a pinched or bared wire from the horn switch down to the horn itself .It must be shorting out to ground somewhere , failing that , disconnect the wire at the horn and see if the fuse still blows when you press the horn button.
Then you will be able to locate the problem .

Thanks one and all

Got a few ideas from these replies, and the wiring diagram will be a big help.

To to add a few things,

as long as the ignition is on, then it will blow the fuse and i disconected the horn and it still blew the fuse (making me think that it is earthing on the frame)

Thanks a lot, will have a good look this week.

Cheers
